Wakam is a B2B2C Tech insurer that designs white label insurance products for its partners (Insurtechs, traditional insurance brokers, retail players, neo-banks, airlines companies, etc.).

Our insurance products have the particularity of being embedded in the products or services offered to the end-customer (for example, you take a self-service e-scooter , you are
automaticallyinsured).Wakam is present in 30 European countries (bonus point if you’re able to list them during the interview!). In 2020, we made 58% of our turnover outside France.

✎ Job Description

The Senior Legal Counsel will be part of Wakam Legal Partnerships Team and will report to Wakam Chief Legal Officer.

The Senior Legal Counsel’s scope of work will mainly consist in assisting and supporting business and project teams in all and all discussions and negotiations in relation to Wakam’s strategic deals and partnerships (either with major insurance distributors – MGAs -, insurtechs or non-insurance specialists) across European territories where Wakam operates.

As such he/she will act as a key contributor for the design, the implementation and the post implementation management of large deals and strategic partnerships and will interact with a wide range of key both internal and external stakeholders.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities

  • Managing & leading a wide range of material and/or complex legal, regulatory & contractual matters and large deals (including drafting and negotiating agreements, structuring compliant insurance distribution partnerships, and advising on applicable legislation and regulation, with the support of external legal counsels where needed)
  • Building and maintaining relationships with, supporting, and reporting and updating key internal stakeholders on legal and regulatory matters; understanding the business strategy and tactical priorities
  • Translating business decisions into legal and contractual documentation
  • Applying a risk based, creative and solution driven approach, while ensuring maximum legal and reputational protection for Wakam

Profile

  • Minimum 10-years-experience required, in-house and/or in law firm(s), with international exposure
  • In-depth experience in drafting and negotiating complex agreements (previous experience in insurance sector would be seen as a real asset)
  • Legal qualification in business law or international business law (admission to Bar is a plus)
  • Ability to work in an international and culturally diverse environment
  • Strong oral and written communications skills and a good sense of diplomacy
  • Ability to leverage deep legal expertise to provide business-oriented recommendations in a heavily regulated environment
  • Fluency in English is essential (Fluency in French is a strong asset)

Inter-relational skills

  • Acting as a real team player with autonomy, strong inter-personal skills and with the ability and confidence to influence others
  • Being highly competent in working in a fast paced and dynamic environment, and in managing competing priorities in a busy and often high-pressured environment
  • Explaining concisely complex legal topics and their relevance to non-legal people including management and operational teams
